Of Anna Nicole Smith And Britney Spears

In Anna Nicole Smith there was no sense of irony, no nod and wink to the camera – there was only a marked expression of stupidity.
Anna had no appeal to intellectuals, but her ridiculously huge boobs coupled with her outrageous behavior made her irresistible to the masses. Even as her bloated body, chock-full of drugs, waits to be buried, her fans and the media don’t want to let go.
In a sane world once this putrid mass of flesh is buried, interest in her would die out. But it will be months before the tabloids and cable TV are Ann Nicole-free.
Then there’s Britney Spears, the pop tart gives trailer park girls everywhere the hope that they also can achieve tabloid fame. All they need to do is bleach their hair, shave their genitals, and bribe or seduce a music producer to technologically enhance their weak vocals.
The Jihadists and born again Christians point to the depravity of American popular culture, as proof that America is headed for oblivion.
Maybe we ought to burn Britney Spears at the stake, in a pay-per-view special. This sacrifice would celebrate the capitalist nature of our democracy, while at the same time expressing our disgust at the debauchery of our jaded celebrities. Let’s appease the Islamists, the evangelicals and all those who long for the good old days when celebrities were required to actually possess a talent or gift.
Britney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith both relish in expressing their individuality. Indeed, they have nothing else to offer, but their individuality. And so Anna appeared at awards shows drunk or high, and Britney flashes her goodies to the photographers.
This depraved exhibition of individuality makes some yearn for the conformity of organized religion, but I see it as the price of living in a democracy.
In a nation that gives us the pride and promise of a Barack Obama; we have to put up with the foolishness and corruption of a Britney Spears or an Anna Nicole Smith.
